Frequently asked questions

General

What data does this app use?
Year Over Year reads 11 health metrics from Apple Health — including steps, active calories, walking & running distance, exercise minutes, and more — and compares your current period against the same period from the previous year. You can view comparisons by month (default), week, or quarter.
Is my data private?
Yes. All health data stays on your device and is read directly from Apple Health. We do not collect, store, or share any of your health information.
What is Demo Mode?
Demo Mode lets you explore the app with sample data, without connecting to Apple Health. You can enable it during onboarding by tapping "Try Demo Mode," or toggle it on and off anytime in Settings.

Comparisons

What does "Year Over Year" compare?
It compares your health data for the current period (month, week, or quarter) against the same period from the previous year. For example, if it’s February 15th and you’re viewing monthly data, it compares your February 1–15 this year against last year’s February.
What are the view modes?
There are three view modes you can switch between using the dropdown at the top of the dashboard. "Per day" shows a daily average for the period. "Total" shows the raw cumulative value. "Projected" (Pro) extrapolates your current pace to estimate the full period total — answering "what am I on track for?"
What are the time periods?
Monthly (default) compares the current month vs. the same month last year. Weekly (Pro) compares the current week (Monday–Sunday) vs. the same week last year. Quarterly (Pro) compares the current quarter vs. the same quarter last year.
What is the difference between "Full period" and "Period to date" comparison?
Full period compares your current data against the entire previous year’s period (e.g., all of last February). Period to date compares against only the same number of elapsed days from last year (e.g., February 1–15 last year if today is February 15). Full period is the default and pairs best with the "Per day" and "Projected" views.

Metrics

How do I customize which metrics are shown?
Tap the sliders icon or the "Customize Metrics" button on the dashboard. You can drag to reorder, remove, or add metrics. Free users can display up to 5 metrics; Pro users can display all 11.
Why is a metric showing 0?
A metric shows 0 when there is no data available in Apple Health for the current period. Make sure the metric is being tracked by your device or a connected app, and that Year Over Year has permission to read it in Settings › Privacy & Security › Health.
What metrics require an Apple Watch?
Exercise minutes, Stand Hours, and VO2 Max require an Apple Watch to record data. Steps, Active Calories, Walking & Running Distance, Flights Climbed, and Cycling Distance can be tracked by your iPhone alone. Running, Workouts, and Workout Duration come from logged workout sessions.

Features

How do I use the interactive charts?
Swipe horizontally on any metric’s chart to scrub through the data. A tooltip will appear showing the values for both years and the percentage change at that point. The chart shows 13 months (or 5 quarters) of history.
What are Insights?
Insights are observations generated from your data — things like which metric improved the most, consistency streaks, projected totals, and milestone alerts. Tap the lightbulb icon on the dashboard to view them. Free users see the top insight; Pro users see all of them.
How do I change the card layout?
Go to Settings and scroll to the Card Layout section. You can choose between Default (large hero cards with charts), Efficient (compact two-row layout), or Condensed (minimal layout that fits more cards on screen).
How does the home screen widget work?
Add the Year Over Year widget to your home screen and configure it by long-pressing. You can choose which metric to display, the view mode (Per day, Total, or Projected), time period, and comparison mode. The widget updates automatically when you open the app. If the widget shows "Open app to load data," open Year Over Year and switch to that time period to cache the data.

Themes

How do I change the theme?
Go to Settings and tap on a theme swatch. You can choose System mode (follows your device’s light/dark setting) or manually select a specific theme. There are 13 themes total — 3 free and 10 premium.
Does the widget match my theme?
Yes. The home screen widget automatically updates to match whichever theme you have selected in the app.

Subscription

What does Pro include?
Pro unlocks weekly and quarterly time periods, the Projected view mode, 10 premium themes, unlimited metrics (free users can display up to 5), all Insights (free users see 1), and multi-period widget support.
What’s included for free?
Monthly comparisons with full period and period-to-date modes, Per day and Total view modes, 3 themes, 3 card layouts, up to 5 metrics, 1 Insight, Demo Mode, interactive chart scrubbing, and a home screen widget (monthly).
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions. Find Year Over Year and tap Cancel Subscription.
How do I request a refund?
Apple handles all subscription refunds. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the charge, and submit a refund request.
How do I restore purchases?
Go to Settings inside the app and tap "Restore Purchases." This will check for any existing subscriptions linked to your Apple ID and re-activate them.

How Metrics Are Measured

Year Over Year reads all data from Apple Health. Some metrics are recorded automatically by your iPhone, some require an Apple Watch, and some come from workouts you log. Here's what each metric tracks.

Steps

Total step count from Apple Health. Your iPhone counts steps automatically via its motion sensor. If you also wear an Apple Watch, Health merges both sources and de-duplicates overlapping periods. Compare to: the Steps card in the Apple Health app.

Active Calories

Total active energy burned in kilocalories. This is the "Move" ring on Apple Watch — calories from movement above your resting rate. Without a Watch, your iPhone estimates active calories from steps and workouts. Compare to: the Move ring in Apple Fitness, or "Active Energy" in Apple Health.

Walking & Running Distance

Total distance in miles from all walking and running activity. Tracked automatically by your iPhone and/or Apple Watch throughout the day — not limited to logged workouts. Compare to: "Walking + Running Distance" in Apple Health.

Running

Total distance in miles from workouts specifically recorded as runs. Only includes workouts you actively start — either in Apple Fitness, the Workout app on Apple Watch, or a third-party running app. Compare to: your running workout history in Apple Fitness or your running app of choice.

Flights Climbed

Total flights of stairs climbed. One flight is approximately 10 feet (3 meters) of elevation gain. Detected by the barometric altimeter in your iPhone. Compare to: "Flights Climbed" in Apple Health.

Exercise

Total exercise minutes. This is the "Exercise" ring on Apple Watch — minutes of activity at or above a brisk walk. Computed automatically by Apple; you cannot write to this metric directly. Requires an Apple Watch. Compare to: the Exercise ring in Apple Fitness.

Stand Hours

Total hours in which you stood and moved for at least one minute. This is the "Stand" ring on Apple Watch. Computed automatically by Apple; requires an Apple Watch. Compare to: the Stand ring in Apple Fitness.

VO2 Max

Your most recent VO2 Max reading in mL/kg/min. Estimated by Apple Watch after outdoor walks, runs, or hikes of sufficient length. Unlike other metrics, Year Over Year shows your latest single reading rather than a cumulative total. Requires an Apple Watch. Compare to: "Cardio Fitness" in Apple Health, or the VO2 Max card in Apple Fitness.

Cycling Distance

Total cycling distance in miles. Includes distance from cycling workouts and, if enabled, automatic cycling detection on Apple Watch. Compare to: "Cycling Distance" in Apple Health.

Workouts

Total count of all recorded workouts regardless of type. Includes every workout you start in Apple Fitness, the Apple Watch Workout app, or any third-party fitness app that writes to Apple Health. Compare to: your workout history in Apple Fitness.

Workout Duration

Total minutes across all recorded workouts regardless of type. Sums the duration of every workout written to Apple Health. Compare to: total workout time in Apple Fitness.
